When a client calls with a deadline, I don't get to say “we'll figure it out later.” I coordinate safety gear and emergency equipment orders for industrial sites. Since Q3 2022, I've processed roughly 200 rush orders—maybe 180, I'd have to check the system—and almost every one came with a question that a brochure didn't answer.
This is the checklist I actually use. It's not exhaustive. It's the stuff that gets people hurt on small jobs and gets deliveries rejected on big ones.
1. Put your boots on at home, not at the gate
In May 2023, early in my first year, I knew I should verify boot sizes on the waybill before dispatch. I thought “what are the odds?” One crew of six had five right boots and one wrong width. Cost us two hours and a very annoyed safety manager.

But if you're setting up a temporary staging area or blocking access for a day, don't grab composite fence panels. They're heavy, they're not designed for quick relocation, and they can blow over if you don't set them up correctly. For temporary work, use interlocking steel or high-density plastic panels with weighted bases or staked feet. If the site is windy, plan to add sandbags or tie-downs.

4. Does pepper spray work on dogs? Yes, but it's not a shield
I get this question on almost every mobile site assessment. Does pepper spray work on dogs? Short answer: sometimes. A directed spray of oleoresin capsicum (OC) can stop a dog by causing eye and airway irritation, but it doesn't work every time, and it can make an aggressive dog more agitated.
I'm not a veterinarian or a dog trainer, so I'm not going to give you a guaranteed method. What I can tell you from field experience is: the spray only helps if you're ready before the dog is close. Gel sprays are easier to aim and don't blow back as much as foggers, but you have to hit the face. Foggers cover more area but turn against you in wind. Check local laws before carrying any pepper spray—some places restrict possession or use.
The better strategy is three layers: avoid the encounter, put an object between you and the dog, and use spray as the last line. A fence panel, pickup bed, or even a shovel can keep distance. Spray is not a substitute for situational awareness.
5. Make sure your “one-time” PPE is actually the right PPE
I see the same mistake on small jobs: someone orders “safety glasses” without checking whether the task needs chemical splash goggles or impact-rated eye protection. There are different ratings for a reason.
Same with boots. A soft-toe Wolverine is a comfortable boot, but if the site spec says steel toe or composite toe, the word “works” on the tongue isn't enough. Match the rating to the task.
And if a client email says “safety helmet required,” that's your clue to ask whether a hard hat with no chin strap is acceptable. I've been on a delivery where the safety manager rejected an entire order because the hard hats had no chin straps and the job spec required them for work at height. That's a costly one.
6. Confirm the supply chain before you need it
When a client calls on a Tuesday night needing Wolverine boots by Thursday, the first question isn't “which boot is best.” It's “which boot can you get to the site in time?”
I've tested a lot of rush delivery options across dozens of orders. The cheap four-day shipping option is rarely the answer. If you're ordering for a crew, build in a 48-hour buffer and confirm sizes early. The last thing you want is to pay $80 in expedited shipping and still get the wrong width.
That's also why I recommend buying a sample pair before you order 20 pairs. It's easier to verify fit with one pair than to return twenty.
7. Walk the site like you're the one who has to work in it
Before you call the job done, do a physical walkthrough. Shake the fence panels, pull on the chin straps, check that everyone's boots actually fit and are laced properly. Put another way: you don't need to look like a manager. You need to look like someone who's about to do the work.
One of our policies now is a 10-minute pre-shift PPE check. We didn't have a formal process before. Then in March 2024, a client called 36 hours before a big site start needing an extra set of gloves and a replacement hard hat. We got the gear there, but if we'd checked the truck before leaving, we wouldn't have needed the emergency drive at all.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's this: don't buy the cheapest PPE and call it done. But also don't buy the most expensive gear and assume that solves everything. There is no “best” boot or helmet—there's only the one that fits the hazard, the person, and the timeframe.
I recommend Wolverine for a lot of crews because the fit is consistent and the steel toe options are legitimate. But if you're on a site with a specific requirement—say, a metatarsal guard or dielectric rating—check that before you order. The same logic applies to head protection and fencing.
And if you're asking about pepper spray for dogs? Test it before you need it, keep it within reach, and don't rely on it as your first move. A good barrier is worth more than a pocket-size spray.
